Peltier Funeral Home, Coffin Sales, 1862-1877, Fort Wayne, Indiana

Louis Peltier was born in the old fort at the junction of the St. Mary's and St. Joe Rivers, which would become the city of Fort Wayne, on 15 Apr 1815. His interest in undertaking began when he was about ten years old and the Native Americans called him "the undertaker." At age twelve, he made his first coffin for Chief Meteah of the Pottawatomie tribe. When Louis reached adulthood, he began cabinet making and undertaking opposite the public square in Fort Wayne. His sons, James C. Peltier and Louis A. Peltier, eventually joined their father in business as Peltier and Sons.
