Entries in the order books are brief and summarize what happened when a probate case came before the judge. For a more complete picture of the probate case, you should also consult the probate packet (aka "loose papers").

Be careful when referencing the volume number of a probate order book. From 1824 through 1852, the Hendricks County Circuit Court numbered their volumes 1 through 5; when the Hendricks County Court of Common Pleas took over jurisdiction in 1853, they started the numbering back at 1 again.

The order books referenced in this index have all been microfilmed, and copies are available at the Family History Library, the Indiana State Library, and locally at the Plainfield Public Library. The Hendricks County government has digitized some of the early probate order books, and the digital copies are available through the Archives section of their website.
