In early 1883, twenty-six Civil War Veterans petitioned the Commander of the Department of Indiana, Grand Army of the Republic for a charter to establish a post in Pendleton. Charter members included: George W. Parker, F.S. Tyler, Charles B. Caddy, Jonathan Jones, P.J. Albright, Charles E. Goodrich, E. Williams, James Whitney, W.R. Teague, L.M. Yost, J.O. Ireland, J. D. Johnston, R.R. Gibbons, J.M. Rogers, B.B. Tillson, J.H. Wood, John H. Hicks, John W. Lewark, G.N. Davidson, Joseph Rumler, J.L. Hensley, William Iford, Samuel Jackson, Thomas M. Hardy, Ziba Darlington, Noah Haines.

The Major Henry Post, No. 230 was organized on August 28, 1883, and was named in honor of Major Samuel Henry. Major Samuel Henry was a prominent Pendleton citizen who entered into service as captain of Company B, 89th Indiana Infantry in August 1862. He was killed near Greenton, Missouri, November 1, 1864.
