Martin, Nicholas J., 310 Engineers

This is the military record for Nicholas John Martin. He was born in Pecs-Szabolcs, Baranya, Hungary on 20 March 1889 and was buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan on 12 September 1956. He served in the U.S. Army in World War I after reporting for initial training to Camp Custer, Michigan, which is about 6 miles west of Battle Creek. He served in the infantry overseas from 21 July 1918 to 19 April 1919, and he was honorably discharged on 4 May 1919 at Camp Dix, New Jersey. He was engaged in the battles at St. Mihiel and Meuse Argonne and was gassed during battle. He spent some time recovering at Chicago Veterans Hospital upon his return. Information from the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis indicated that he received the WWI Victory Medal and the WWI Victory Button. He was a Private in Company C 310 Engineers of the 85th Division. Submitted by his great nephew, Joseph F. Martin of Romeoville, Illinois in March 2009.
