Fort Wayne Weekly Republican, Wednesday, 22 December 1858, p. 4, c.1.

ONE HUNDRED NEW BUILDINGS ERECTED IN THE CITY OF FORT WAYNE IN 1858.

We have been at considerable expense and trouble to ascertain the number of new buildings erected in this city, during the year 1858. We have been particular to give the size of each, and to state whether built of wood or brick, that some judgement might be formed of their value, and in most cases have given the owners name. There may be some errors in our list as to date of completion of buildings or when begun, but no material error we hope will be found. It is gratifying to be able to announce therefore to our citizens, that from a careful examination, we learn that we have had erected in our city during the year 1858 one hundred new buildings. What city in this State except Indianapolis, can furnish such an evidence of prosperity as we present to our readers to-day in the list below.

Our list embraces as will be perceived, quite a number of dwellings, many of them are of a superior class, all are occupied, and if one hundred more were added immediately, they would at once find tenants. For several years past we have experienced great difficulty in finding dwellings for families on their taking up their residence here. Property holders could render the place no better service, nor make investments to any greater advantage, than to build small but neat tenements to rent.

We might have taken time to ascertain the amount expended in these buildings, but did not; we can therefore now only estimate their cost, we suppose it is within bounds to say that $150,000 has been expended in putting up the buildings, exclusive of the value of the lots on which they stand. St. Mary's Church and a half dozen residences that we could select from our list, cost together half that sum.

Among the many evidences of business enterprize in our city, we note with pleasure two large Wholesale Grocery establishments, one by Messrs. Robb & McComb, and the other by Messrs. William & Huestis. The former firm have connected with their establishment a Vinegar, the latter a Candy manufactory.

Messr. Robb & McComb from the 1st of August to the 1st of December made 854 bbls of Cider Vinegar, an article superior in quality to any made in the west. Their capacity for this branch of business enables them to prepare for shipment 10 bbls per day, which finds a market in northern and middle Indiana and Ohio. There is a similar establishment in Lafayette, we understand, which turns our about 2 bbls per day.

Messrs. Williams & Huestis are manufacturing about one ton of Candy per week. H. H. Bossler, is also a manufacturer of Candy, and sells large quantities of it.
